Thief in Puako

Aloha Puako,

This guy has been caught stealing in Puako, driving dangerously on the highway and camping in town. He may be still in town. Please be on the look out and keep things locked up!If you see something suspicious please call Police.

Police did talk with him today, 2/5/21.  The following is an update:

2/5/2021

This is about the guy named Nobriga who has been causing trouble in Puako since 2/3/21:

There were 9 enforcement personnel and vehicles, EMT truck, fire engine and FD truck at a Puako Beach access today. He, NOBRIGA had a cut and was bleeding.

NOBRIGA was contacted and arrested earlier. Apparently there was another incident this morning at the house on the south side of the access point.

He is being processed at the SK police station for numerous violations stemming from this mornings incident. His vehicle was locked and left at the beach access point, where it will be marked as abandoned if it is not removed by tomorrow.

Thank you for clearing his items earlier. All of his clothing was removed from the fence line and deposited into the trash bin. Hopefully it will be serviced before the end of the day because it is full, as are a few others at the other access points.

He has also been warned about the trespassing violations and camping in unauthorized areas. Please do not hesitate to contact us for assistance with any future issues in the area.

Thank you.

Please let DOCARE and HPD know you appreciate their assistance in keeping our community safe!

Puako Burglary

Hawaiʻi Island Police arrested a Kamuela man following an investigation into a residential burglary.

On (August 9) South Kohala Patrol officers responded to a report of a burglary in the 69-1600 block of Puako Beach Drive. Upon their arrival, officers learned a male suspect was observed removing various tools from within an open garage. The male suspect then left the area on foot. Officers immediately conducted checks for the suspect and located him near the shoreline at the Puako Boat Ramp. 26-year-old Kyle Lusardi, of Kamuela, was arrested and transported to the South Kohala Police Station as officers continued the investigation.

Officers located and recovered all of the stolen items which were then returned to the owner. After consulting with the Prosecutor’s Office, Lusardi was charged for Burglary in the first-degree and Theft in the fourth-degree. His bail has been set at $5,250. Lusardi was transported to the Kealakehe Police Station where he will remain pending his initial court appearance on Monday, (August 12).

The Hawaiʻi Police Department encourages community members to remain vigilant.

Please keep items locked up and report anyone suspicious to Police ASAP 935-3311

Funding for planning and design of a wastewater collection system at Puako

Aloha y’all,

I just got some great news from Representative David Tarnas. The Legislature will include funding in the State Budget for planning and design of a wastewater collection system at Puakō. This is an outstanding affirmation that our lawmakers understand how important our public trust clean coastal waters are for all of us in West Hawai’i and across the state.

Hi Chad,

Great news!  We are able to include funding in the State Budget for planning and design of a wastewater collection system at Puako!

The funding comes with a requirement for the County to provide matching funds equaling ten percent of the state funds appropriated for the project.

Once plans and design are complete, and an agreement is in place with a wastewater treatment plant to take the wastewater, then we’ll need to go back to the legislature and request funding to construct the system.

Then individual homeowners would need to pay for their own connection from their home to the sewer.

The description and amounts of funding in the State CIP budget are as follows:

Project Name:  Clean Water for Reefs Puako Hawaii

Description:  Plans and Design for a sewer system for a priority cesspool replacement area, provided that the County of Hawaii shall provide matching funds equaling ten percent of the State funds appropriated for the purpose of this project.

FY 20:  $200,000  (General Obligation Bond funding) + $40,000 (County Funds)

FY 21:  $1,300,000 (General Obligation Bond funding) + $260,000 (County Funds)

There’s lots more work to do on this important project. But, this is a great step forward.

Please forward this information to all your contacts in Puako.  People can contact me for more information.  Thanks!

Aloha, David

Rep. Tarnas is open and available to share more or answer you questions and can be reached at reptarnas@capitol.hawaii.gov.

This is the budget in HB 1259 SD1 CD1 for those who are tracking bills.

I’m very excited about this important step because of the potential for a design that can address wastewater at the most appropriate scale for the beaches, community, and reefs of the Puakō region.  I think that a high-impact plan will secure the necessary resources for implementation and that there are a number of options and solutions for connection fees after the best design is determined.

Thanks to Rep. Tarnas and Erica Perez and her team at CORAL, and big thanks to the tenacious and capable members of the Puakō community who have and will continue to find ways to keep this project moving forward toward the eventual goal of cleaner water and healthier reefs. Please share this good news with your neighbors.

Thank you,

Chad Wiggins

Aloha Oe Peter Hackstedde

Aloha Ohana of Peter Hackstedde,

Last Saturday morning our beloved Peter Hackstedde left us in his sleep.  He was 66 years old, father of Susie Hackstedde, and cherished ku’uipo of our mother, Holly O’Riordan.

He was a bright light in our community, or as Narand Patel put it, a “man pillar.”  Through Alcoholics Anonymous, the Puako Community Association, and by being a friendly advocate for the community, Peter was a force for good.  He was everywhere all the time, supporting during disasters (Fires, tsunamis, floods), engaging with authorities over new projects, and stopping by the General Store many times a day, often to pick up a popsicle.

He did so many little things to keep the community well-cared for and supported.  He also did some major things, especially by leading the construction of the firebreak behind the community. He made incredible efforts to support us all.

We are heartbroken because we loved Peter so much.  Our mom Holly feels it the most, as she and Peter were high school sweethearts.

We so appreciate your thoughts, condolences, flowers, food, drinks, special gifts, and the incredible outpouring of love we have felt in recent days.  That is a testament to the impact Peter had on all of us, and the love we all had for him.

Holly is entering a new, as yet unknown chapter.  Her daughter Katelyn is due to give birth to a baby girl on April 3rd, so for a little while Holly will be tutu on Maui.  Beyond that, the future is a mystery.

The Puako community was the bedrock of Holly and Peter‘s life together, and love for Holly from neighbors and friends is most appreciated during this transitional time.

Information will be forthcoming about a celebration of life for Peter, sometime in 2019, when we can come together and celebrate this amazing man.  Peter wanted us to paddle out and deliver his remains to the Puako ocean, so that is what we will do.

If you would like to give a monetary gift to contribute to Peter‘s memorial celebration, feel free to make donations here through venmo(www.venmo.com) to this private, non-social account: @Holly-ORiordan.

Thank you all for your love for Peter and your support of Holly in the coming weeks and months.

Mahalo,
Andrew and Katelyn O’Riordan
